When a visitor hits your web page and decides to subscribe, they have started a virtual hand shake with you.

Your next two steps include a thank you page and confirming (opt-in) email.

The thank you page is your chance to communicate for the first time after they have decided to put their email address in the box.

The final step is the confirming (opt-in) email which is your second chance to communicate after they plugged their email address in the little box.

If they follow the complete path, they are a subscriber — if they don’t, you lost ‘em forever.

Now, stay with me here.

If you absorb the rest of this article, you will see tremendous improvement in your list building conversion process and you will build your list faster.

I have a question for you.

Have you ever shook someone’s hand and when you pull your hand away it’s all soaking wet?

You know, the other person had a wet sweaty hand. Yes, Yuck!

The person with the wet hand didn’t take a second to wipe it first - they messed up their first impression with you. Getting your subscriber to complete the process is a lot like a hand shake. You get it right and you’re off to a good start. Get it wrong and you messed up the hand shake and your conversion went from interested person to lost subscriber.

So, I want to you to ask yourself the following question - am I reaching out to my visitor with a sweaty hand?

The topic of whether you should have a double opt-in for new subscribers to your list comes up a lot. It’s a tough issue and people don’t often agree which is best.

Here is my story. The first list I started was a double opt-in list. It quickly caused me a lot of frustration as I was getting a bunch of subscribers but they weren’t completing the optin process. Ugghhh, I was losing leads and it hurt.

So I took the hard route, and started my list building over with a new autoresponder service. This time is was single opt-in. I soon realized that now I was capturing all of my leads BUT the quality of the folks on my list dropped dramatically. I was no longer getting the feedback and comments from my email. The conversions from my emails dropped like a meteor falls into the ocean. Great, now I had a big but mostly unresponsive list. Not exactly how I had planned it.

I never quit. So I went back to the drawing board and decided that I would give double opt-in a shot again. This time I put way more effort into the entire conversion process. I used a common theme from start to finish (i.e. opt-in to offer). These tweaks caused my opt-ins to dramatically increase. People were now completing the process 80% (or more) of the time.

Now, every time I get another double opt-in subscriber, I know there is a real person on the other end and it provides me with the opportunity to build a relationship.

Wow, lesson learned. Now I have the best of both worlds. I have a high quality interested group of people on my list and I am losing very few leads.

I stumbled accross this article which provides good content for list building strategies:

One of the biggest mistakes when I first started marketing online was that I did not build a list. If I had first done this I would have been earning a lot more online. I am sure that you must see many affiliates that send all their traffic to a sales page.

I really enjoy testing different traffic methods. You can learn a lot from the different types of traffic and converting the traffic into subscriber relationships.

I decided to give my first viral exchange a try. It’s called ViralURL

I chose the option that cost $197 for a lifetime membership — hope it lasts for a while. :)

The first mailing was to 3,000 people and so far I have had about 8 sign-ups. It’s only been a couple of hours though. If it hit 20, I will be pleased.

I will keep you posted on the results.

Here is the site I am referring to:

If you use the services of an independent contractor or plan to, then you should have an independent contractor agreement in place.

Do you?

If not, I suggest you have your contractor sign one.

Business owners often will classify service providers as independent instead of employees. Why? well there are less forms to file, less taxes to pay and makes you feel like you can terminate a contractor with less hassle.

The big problem with this is the contractor has to meet a set of criteria to qualify as an independent contract. If they don’t qualify, the problems can be huge..back taxes, unemployment payments, penalties. In short, it can get yucky.

One key criteria is having an agreement in place with the contractor covering issues like:

    They are independent
They are responsible for their own taxes
They are responsible for their own insurance

This is just some of the items in a typical agreement but I am sure you get the idea.

Do you see why having a California independent contractor agreement is important?

Keep in mind, the agreement itself doesn’t determine whether you qualify but it’s a darn good start.

Small Business Tax Deduction

Are You Overpaying Your Taxes? A Lesson On Small Business Tax Deductions

Ouch!

Who wants to overpay taxes?

Well, I hope you don’t.

But…the reality is that you do…

What makes me so sure?

I have prepared literally 100’s of small business tax returns and it seems like every return I reviewed had missed deductions.

How can you be sure your small business gets all of the tax deductions you deserve?

What if you hire a professional?

Unfortunately no, most professionals try hard but typically can’t invest the time it takes to really make sure you are getting your deductions

How about one of those fancy tax software programs?

Nope….a lot of reading and too much chance for confusion

Well, the truth is…there is no perfect answer but I do have a suggestion that will dramatically increase the chance you save thousands in taxes…

The answer..do your own homework. What?

Yep, the clients that got the most bang for their buck and in most cases saved the most money….did a little research and homework on their own.

The folks that peppered me with questions…they were armed and dangerous…and you know what — got the best result.

Are you ready to make money by paying less tax?

YOU BETTER READ THIS NOW OR ELSE…..

Angry Man Pointing

Please let me explain why I have started this post with such a bold headline and picture.

I subscribe to quite a few email newsletters and as you can imagine receive a wide range of writing styles.

Occasionally I will receive an email like the one I am about to share with you.

As I read the email, it definitely sparks an emotion for me but I often wonder whether it works and how it makes a reader such as yourself feel.

Here is a snippet from an email I received:

==============================================

I need to know right away…

Are you IN, or are you OUT?

Look, it’s nothing personal, but a decision
MUST be made today about you and the XXXXXX program.

It will either be A or B.

A)

I can make that decision for you
without your input, or…

B)

You can take charge of the situation
and show me that you mean business

==============================================

That’s about half of the original email but I think you get the idea.

My question to you is this…does this type of email work with you…do you buy, read or participate?

What’s going through your mind as you read it?

I would love to know your thoughts…..
