Have you ever been burned by someone? You know ripped off?
This is just a friendly reminder to keep your guard up when you are
considering buying products and services on the internet. The
saying “if it’s too good to be true…” definitely applies when
buying on the internet.
Here’s a few tips that will help you avoid losing money when doing
business on the net.
> Buying A Website
If someone is offering to sell their “web business” or a website,
do your research before paying for it. If they are making income
claims, make sure you ask for proof of income like actual Paypal
statements not JPG altered documents.
You should also ask for traffic logs and do a search on Alexa.com
for traffic stats and ranking.
Do a search for the seller’s name on Google. Search his address
and anything else about him. Let’s say his name was John Smith and
he lived at 1010 Steal From You Drive, Scam City, CA USA
I would search like this:
1) “John Smith” “1010 Steal From You” Scam City
2) “1010 Steal From You” Scam City
3) “John Smith” Scam
4) “John Smith” Fraud
There are a lot more search strings but I think you get the idea.
Look up the history and ownership of the domain. Confirm the age
of the domain matches the income history. If the domain is
private, ask for contact information that you can verify.
If there is a product included, review the product or at minimum a
sample of it. In fact, you may even want to buy a sample copy to
see a full version if the seller won’t provide one.
Don’t get caught up in the emotions of the purchase. This is the
biggest mistake we all make (myself included). We get so caught in
buying something great, we drop our guard and more often than not
get burned.
Be prepared to walk away from a deal if something doesn’t seem
right. There will always be another deal.
I will complete part 2 tomorrow which will include a discussion of forced continuity, free samples and incredible offers.
